Photography: The Moon and Eclipses

One of the many surprises of my photography hobby was taking this picture of the moon (above). Although a lot claimed it to be their own, I still have friends and supporters who rallied for that. Thanks so much.

Anyways, I’m gonna share with you some tips from Digital Photography School on how to photograph the moon with your DSLR.

Let’s go…

First, you’re going to have to need a long telephoto lens. I took that with my 250mm. But it’s better if you use 300mm or above for clearer (bigger photos).

DSLR Settings when taking photos of the moon

  • ISO: Set as low as possible for a clearer photo. Around 100 or 200 ISO will be fine
  • Aperture: You don’t want a bokeh for this so set it to f/11
  • Other tools: Tripod. Essential. ‘Nuff Said.
  • Post-processing: In Photoshop, to enhance the photos, try this: curves to medium contrast and apply an unsharp mask filter (amount 150%, radius 1.0, threshold 0)

That’s it.

The next time an eclipse of a full moon comes out, you’ll be ready. I’d be more than happy if you would share with me the photos.

You might get a shot like this (not mine, though. That’s from the DPS Site, most probably the post’s author)

Thanks!
